Inside my Sketch book

When aunt pat was here she showed me a picture of a clown she had painted. I said I didn't realize she could paint like that and she (like a typical Lyon) said oh you can do anything you decide you can.

So I had that in my mind each time I'd see handlettered, drawn and painted pieces that I'd like. Then a friend sent me The Creative License. It basically says we don't know how to draw because we have never been taught. But we all have the ability.  Just like people aren't born knowing how to drive but have the ability.

So I decided that I could do it too. I have a few books that I'm following And I try to do what they suggest even if it's not my style. So far I've learned that I don't like colored sharpies (even though that's the girls favorite) Bella saw these, gasped, and said, "oh you should sell these!"

I much prefer the use of just black.

My favorite verse:

I've even started doing it in the hoops that I sell:)

The painting part is turning out to be a little more difficult but I'm still enjoying it. I don't practice as much because it's harder to set up and the lettering is just grabbing the sketch book. I even took a few minutes and made a pen holder for my favorite drawing pens. That way when I have five minutes it's easy just to grab.

  1. Your work is so beautiful! I've always known I could draw, I just need some guidance. So .... what books are you using? I've been on the lookout for a while. I may have an Amazon gift card that's been needing my attention and I've been saving it just for this.

    1. If I were you I'd use the gift card for pens, sketch book and things like that. When I'm done with my book I'll send it too you.

  2. Love the Aunt Pat story-so true:)

I'm always happy to be on the receiving end of your talent! LOVE IT!

I think art/design is in our blood. I've kept a sketch pad since I was young and knew I would become serious someday. I've never been surprised when I see something one of the six of us puts down on paper (or any other medium) that looks fantastic. Remember when Mom sent in Matthew's drawing and it was evaluated on the genius level. I remember thinking "We all draw like that." Daddy has an artistic eye for sure and I've always seen him enjoy the design aspects of projects. The detail in some of his doodles and drawings has fascinated me:) All that to say this, we should take Melissa's cue and post some of our art/design work for the rest of us to appreciate. I really enjoy seeing my siblings creative sides!

P.S. Melissa I really want to buy that E from you for above Emma's bed. It's beautiful yet complicated which is exactly how I see her. I can't stop looking at it. Also, I am so glad to see that you are signing your work.
