Babies, Babies, Babies

Right before I left for NY we had 3 hens that started to roost.  So we decided to put day old chicks under them rather than have them sit the 21 days to hatch their eggs because the eggs kept getting mixed up.  Well, the first time around it went well and the hen accepted the five chicks (2 of which are still alive and kicking)  However the other two hens thought we were crazy and pecked us and the babies out of the coup.  So that left Robert with seven babies to care for=)

Here Arrabella is showing Cecelia the chicks tail.  She will say things like, “you have to be gentle C, it’s a little scared.”  Cute._MG_7825_MG_7826_MG_7830

I just went out today to collect eggs and from under one of the hens a tiny little chick poked out its head!  We were very excited=) We will give them a few more days and then clear out the duds.

  1. Wow! Bella is quite the farm girl. You'll need those new babies to replenish the flock :)

  2. Am i understanding that one of the chickens hatched her own chick? That black one is really pretty. What kind is it?

    1. Yes. Actually they are sister moms. They have three chicks between them and co-parent=) I was a little worried at first because I heard if there are two hens brooding at the same time that when the chicks hatch they will fight over them and sometimes attack the other hen's chicks. So happy that didn't happen. Mike wanted me to use the eggs that didn't hatch for the egg toss. I didn't think the ladies would have been able to handle that=) I think it is a silver laced something-or-other. When it is grown it will have black feathers with white tips.

    2. A silver-laced wyendote. They are very pretty grown up, but not real friendly and kind of snotty. At least ours were that way.

  3. I think you should send some of these pictures to Mary Jane to put in her magazine. They are so cute.
